Jesse Winker singled home the winning run in the 10th inning, and the Cincinnati Reds beat the visiting Chicago White Sox 1-0 on Wednesday, in a game highlighted by a pitcher's duel between Sonny Gray and Dallas Keuchel.

With Cincinnati's Tucker Barnhart placed on second to start the 10th, Nick Senzel singled to left off Chicago right-hander Liam Hendriks. Winker, who worked a full count, followed with a laser to right-center field that allowed the Reds to split the two-game set.

Cincinnati, shut down in Tuesday's 9-0 loss, managed just seven hits in the series.

Reds right-hander Gray (who lowered his ERA to 3.92) and Chicago left-hander Keuchel (3.79) more than held their own. Each allowed two hits and both set season highs by completing seven innings.

Gray struck out eight with two walks while Keuchel fanned just one and overcame three bases on balls.

Cincinnati's Tejay Antone didn't allow a hit in two innings of relief, but with a runner placed on second in the 10th, Lucas Sims walked Chicago's Yasmani Grandal. Leury Garcia's fielder's choice left runners on first and third, but he was thrown out trying to steal second. Sims followed with a strikeout of ex-Red Billy Hamilton.

The Reds had runners at second and third with nobody out in the first, but failed to score Senzel was thrown out at the plate by Jose Abreu on a ground ball to first base. They loaded the bags in the ninth, but Hendriks got Barnhart to ground into a force out at third base to end the inning.

Cincinnati played without star Nick Castellanos, batting .324 with nine homers and 20 RBIs, who was scratched from the lineup due to back tightness. Fellow Reds star Joey Votto was hit on the left thumb by a pitch in the fourth inning and departed after the fifth inning.
