Isaiah Spiller rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown and No. 5 Texas AM stymied visiting LSU's offense in a 20-7 SEC victory on Saturday night.
Spiller provided enough offense to offset a sub-par performance by Kellon Mond, who completed 11 of 34 for 105 yards as the Aggies improved to 6-1 after returning from a two-week absence due to COVID issues.
Texas AM took away the running game from the Tigers (36 yards on 25 carries) and harassed both of LSU's freshman quarterbacks that filled in for injured Myles Brennan.
TJ Finley started and completed 9 of 25 for 118 yards with two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown. Max Johnson completed 14 of 22 for 113 yards and a touchdown.
The game was played in moderate rain that began about an hour before kickoff, which contributed to the struggles of both offenses.
The Aggies led 13-0 at halftime and Buddy Johnson intercepted Finley and ran 15 yards for a touchdown that increased the margin to 20-0 at the end of the third quarter.
Johnson replaced Finley to start the Tigers' next series, but it made little difference, though LSU (3-4, 3-4) did avoid a shutout when Johnson threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Terrace Marshall Jr., who had 10 catches for 134 yards, with 38 seconds left.
LSU moved into scoring range on its first possession of the game, but Tyrion Davis-Price was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-1 at the Texas AM 35.
The Aggies broke the scoreless tie when Seth Small kicked a 41-yard field goal and Spiller, who carried 27 times, ran 52 yards for a touchdown that increased the lead to 10-0 at the end of the first quarter.
The score stayed that way while Finley was replaced by Johnson for two series.
Finley returned and connected with Marshall for a 54-yard pass completion. His apparent 31-yard touchdown pass to Kayshon Boutte was ruled incomplete on replay and Finley was intercepted by Jaylon Jones on the next play.
Small added a 40-yard field goal as time expired to give Texas AM a 13-0 halftime lead.
