Japan lacking in social security safeguards

Japan’s legal fraternity believes the lack of a social security system has caused a substantial rise in poverty.

The Japan Federation of Bar Associations claims more than 43 percent of those who assumed their first jobs between 2002 and 2007 were not employed regularly.

They have said the rise in temporary work has stirred demand for social security measures, as temporary workers are only receiving about 50 percent of what a permanent worker would get.

The Japanese government has curbed social security expenses by cutting unemployment insurance benefits and child-care allowances.
